Counseling Services

The National Standards for School Counseling Programs facilitate student development in three board areas:   academic development, career development and personal/social development. (Following are the nine national standards.)

School counseling programs are collaborative efforts benefiting students, parents, teachers, administrators and the overall community. School counseling programs are an integral part of students' daily educational environment, and school counselors are partners in student achievement.

Galloway Township Public Schools have one counselor in each of the elementary schools and one for each grade level at the middle school. The school counselors provide individual and small group counseling as well as classroom lessons on particular subjects related to the areas of: Careers/Study Skills, Social Skills, and Stress Management. Specific topics are addressed at each grade level such as: listening, attention, working with others, manners, personal space, feelings, sharing, telling vs. tattling, empathy, honesty, what is a good friend?, anger, self-control, what can you do?, conversation skills, relaxation, cliques/exclusion, solving friendship problems, organization, stress release ; gossip/rumors-how to stop, body language, how/why to study, telling NOT snitching, respecting others/differences, getting ready for Middle/High School, coping with loss and making good choices.


Academic Development

Standard A: Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills contributing to effective learning in school and across the life span.

Standard B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.

Standard CStudents will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community.

Career Development 

Standard A: Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decision.

Standard B: Students will employ strategies to achieve future career success and satisfaction.

Standard C: Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education and training and the world of work.

Personal/Social Development

Standard A: Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Standard B: Students will make decisions, set goals and take necessary action to achieve goals.
Standard C: Students will understand safety and survival skills.
